The Cajon

The Cajon has been used for centuries in many varying cultures, however, it was the legendary guitarist Paco de Lucia who introduced the Peruvian Cajon on the Flamenco scene. Since then it has become a must in almost every Flamenco group and fresh new sounds and techniques have developed in light of this.

The explosion that the instrument has experienced over the last two decades has spurred an evolution in the building techniques and materials seeing it develop into a fantastic tool for all styles of music. The sonic possibilities and physical lightness have captivated musicians the world over.

The Cajon has now become one of the highest selling percussion instruments in Spain and its reputation is now spreading globally.

The musical possibilities are almost limitless. It can be played with the hands, brushes, pedals either seated or standing and offers both a solid bass and sharp treble in one instrument. They are used by some percussionists to add a specific colour in large set ups and by others, owing to their ease of transportation and similarity to a snare and bass drum, as a drum kit substitution for acoustic performances.

Although Cajon techniques have developed to unbelievable limits it can be enjoyed and played from the first hit, with an easy to achieve sound.
