Brighton Institute of Modern Music
An interactive Workshop on how to play Contemporary and Flamenco styles on the Cajon. Students at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music explore new possibilities of how to apply rhythms usually performed on drums and learn to transfer them onto this new and hip instrument.
Albert Villa went to BIMM to hold a workshop about the Cajon and its historical background. He covered hand techniques, positioning and explained how to transfer drum set concepts to the instrument. Some grooves were also covered as well as rudiments and brush applications. He looked at Bulerías, a specific flamenco style and applied this odd counting system to contemporary styles. Phrasing, soloing and drum set ideas were also discussed. The atmosphere was very relaxed and the students were thoroughly entertained especially since they had the chance to play and try all concepts during the masterclass.
